What is Apple Fixed Format Layout
In December 2010,Apple released its Fixed Format Layout. This is an eBook format designed specifically for fixed layout EPUB books. It was invented to work only with Apple devices,including the iPad,iPhone and iTouch running iOS 4 or iOS 5. It will no work on other EPUB devices.
Examples of Fixed Layout EPUBs
Fixed layout formats are typically used for books with illustrations and are sometimes also referred to as “illustrated books”. Examples of the types of books that may use a fixed layout format include childrens’books,cookbooks,art books,travel books and photography books,all of which include photographs,illustrations or pictures.
Comparison to EPUB and Kindle Formats
eBook produced in the EPUB (for iPad and Nook) and MOBI and AZW (for Kindle) are normally “reflowable”. This means that the text and font can be resized by the person reading the book using their reading device. The page numbers on reflowable ebooks don’t really matter. If you make the font size larger,the text will automatically reflow and so the book will have more “pages”.
The Appple Fixed Format Layout is not reflowable. Electronic books in this format are more like PDFs. They have a fixed number of pages. The reader can zoom in or out on an entire page,but he or she cannot increase the size of the font size of the text itself.
The benefit of the fixed format layout eBook is that you can precisely determine where an object appears on a page. That way,images can be placed exactly where the author wants them and will not change in size or position relative to the text. It is even possible to create a two-page image using this layout.
